Take Care of Yourself as a Leader
Leadership can be hard work. Find ways to take care of yourself both professionally and personally. I continue to learn and grow, but here are some things I’ve discovered along the way that help me to continue on my leadership journey.
Be Good to Yourself
As leaders we can become engrossed in all we are working on. I know I sometimes find it hard to stop working or leave my work at the office. Long days and difficult projects can leave us tired and stressed. Be good to yourself and recognize when you need to take a break and rest. You can be a more effective leader if you keep your stress levels down. Do things that are just for you so you can take care of yourself physically and emotionally. Take a walk, get enough sleep, eat a good meal, watch a movie, spend time with friends, or do whatever activities help you get the rest you need to rejuvenate yourself.
Learn Something New
Sullivan (2013, 175) reminds us that leaders must “Refresh! Renew! Research! Refocus!” She says, “Effective leaders know that even the greatest vision requires updating.” It is important to step back, reflect, take in new information, listen to a different perspective, or look at things with fresh eyes. Think of how energizing it is to learn something new or take on a new challenge. Leaders need time and ways to find their growth edge and stay invigorated by their work. Think about what you haven’t tried, what more you could do, what else you could learn, or what else you could consider. These ideas will help you continue to grow professionally and stay energized by your leadership.

Surround Yourself with Good People
Challenging situations or people can be draining. Surround yourself with people who help sustain you, energize you, and remind you to take care of yourself. When feeling stressed, take time to be with people who make you feel good. It is also important to have mentors or peers who can provide support. Find people to talk to who understand your work or your leadership role. They know what it’s like and can help provide perspective, ideas, support, and guidance. Sometimes we just need to think out loud or vent, so having people in your life with good listening skills can help you reflect and keep you grounded in your own strengths.
So take some time to surround yourself with friends, food, relaxation, and activities that recharge you and sustain you.
